Basic Info
Who am I and what’s this site supposed to be about?
I’m just a geeky computer enthusiast and gamer. I don’t know everything there is to know about computers and I don’t have the patience to learn about programming so my skills there leave a lot to be desired, that being said I can usually bumble my through the necessary permutations when I have to. I do my best to learn something new when I can, and if nothing else have a laugh during the process … errr most of the time anyway.
This is a casual page I’m not taking it too serious, I don’t plan to write any technical books, seek out riches, rewards, or fame for anything found here. Topics covered will be varied and range across many things besides technology, such as my own opinions on whatever strikes my mood at a given time, gaming experiences, or thoughts on movies, tv shows, books, gadgets, and various other subjects that may or may not be of interest anyone besides myself. Hopefully you will find something helpful, fun, or in some way amusing if you stop by.
What is PC-BSD and why game with it?
PC-BSD is FreeBSD… however the design of PCBSD is geared towards making BSD a friendlier and easier to use Desktop OS rather as than just being focused Server OS. There are some other differences but that really needs to be discussed somewhere else and are not relevant to anything here.
What is FreeBSD you might ask? A lot of places have better explanations than I do but briefly, FreeBSD is a UNIX® like operating system. If you would like all the specific details check out this page - [LINK] or you can also check out PC-BSD here – [LINK]
I’ve used every version of MS Windows from 3.11 all the way through to the most recent variations. I’ve always felt strangled by it’s limitations, infuriated with it’s hit or miss reliability, and frustrated with it’s tendency to taking a huge amount of time to fix when the shit does hit the fan. Let’s not forget the outrageous prices charged especially if you want a full featured OS and fork out your hard earned cash for the so called “pro” or “ultimate” versions. Bah!!
My experiences with FreeBSD & PC-BSD have always been the opposite, with them I have a sense of unlimited potential and security from it’s stability. I enjoy having options and being able to pick and choose how, and where, things are done on my computer. I also enjoy having the option to completely customize the look and feel when the mood strikes me.
I’ve been a gamer from wayyyy back, and I do mean wayyy back ….so for me mixing gaming and my favorite Operating System just makes sense. Unfortunately the gaming industry ignores anything besides consoles or MS based systems without there being any profit in it for them, I can’t blame them for that they are in business to make lots of money. However, being someone who loves going against the flow it makes me do the happy dance when despite what “they” want ….I can sometimes force a game into working on my OS <queue insane laughter> HAHAHAHAH! When that happens it is a very good day indeed.
